Omega's and Antioxidants?

Omega's and Antioxidants?

Wednesday 17th May 2023

Incorporating Omega's, Essential Fatty Acids and Antioxidants, into your skincare routine can have a positive impact on your skin's health and appearance, but how? What are they and what do they do?

Let's start with Omega's - What are they and where do they come from?

Omega Fatty Acids are a mix of unsaturated fatty acids, monounsaturated fatty acids, and polyunsaturated fatty acids. There are three main types that contain the following acids:

Omega 3 - Contains Linolenic Acid, found in fish oils, flaxseed oil, chia seed and leafy vegetables.
Omega 6 - Contains Linoleic Acid, found in vegetable oils. Oils high in Linoleic acid include safflower, grapeseed, sun-flower, hemp, wheatgerm, walnut, sesame, peanut and rice bran.
Omega 9 - Contains Oleic Acid, found in olive, almond, apricot, avocado, peach and shea butter.

Why is this important and what do Omega's do?

Omega's offer incredible skin benefits and act as building blocks in the skin cells, strengthening the surface layers of the skin, whilst minimising the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, to promote a smoother, healthier, younger-looking complexion. To understand this, we need to look at the Fatty Acids they contain and what they do.

Linolenic - A polyunsaturated fatty acid known for its skin conditioning, skin-softening properties to products and is considered to promote healthy skin growth and is anti-inflammatory.
Linoleic - A polyunsaturated fatty acid. Linoleic acid is considered to be healing, anti-inflammatory and restorative.
Oleic - A monounsaturated fatty acid that works as a rich moisturiser with antioxidant properties that will penetrate the skin well.

Topical application of Omega Fatty Acids helps to:
• Strengthen and smooth the skin's surface
• Repair the skin barrier to improve moisture and elasticity
• Soothe irritated, sensitive, and red skin
• Eliminate flaky, dehydrated skin
• Nourish and protect skin against environmental damage and signs of ageing
• Retain moisture, regulate oil production and maintain elasticity
• Minimise the appearance of find lines

Antioxidant's

Antioxidants are naturally occurring compounds that can be found in various plant oils, fruits and vegetables, nuts, and seeds. They help protect the body's cells from damage caused by free radicals, which are unstable molecules produced through various processes like exposure to sunlight, pollution, and stress. Antioxidants neutralize these free radicals, reducing their harmful effects on the skin.

What are the Dangers of Free Radicals?

Oxidative Stress - Free radicals are highly reactive molecules that can cause oxidative stress. They have unpaired electrons, which makes them unstable and prone to react with other molecules in the body, including proteins, lipids, and DNA. This reaction can lead to cellular damage and impair normal cellular function.

Cellular Damage - Free radicals can attack and damage cellular components, including cell membranes, proteins, and DNA. This damage can disrupt cell structure and function, leading to various skin issues and accelerating the aging process.

Aging and Wrinkles - The accumulation of free radical damage over time can contribute to premature aging. Free radicals can break down collagen and elastin fibers, which are essential for maintaining skin elasticity and preventing the formation of wrinkles and fine
lines.

Inflammation - Free radicals can trigger and perpetuate inflammation in the body, inflammation has been linked to a range of skin problems, including eczema and psoriasis.

By incorporating Omega's and Antioxidants into our skincare routines, we can harness their power to promote a healthy balanced skin and maintain a more youthful appearance. Whilst supporting our body's defense against free radicals and promoting a healthier future.
